Biography of Adam Gontier
Early LifeAdam Gontier, the vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primary songwriter of the band Three Days Grace, was born in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, in May 1978. He spent his childhood in Markham, Ontario, living with his mother Patricia and father Gordon. In 1995, the family moved to Norwood, where Adam enrolled in the local high school. It was in Norwood that Gontier met his future bandmate, Brad Walst.
Groundswell and Three Days Grace
From 1992 to 1995, Gontier was a part of the school rock band Groundswell. In 1997, along with two members of Groundswell, bassist Brad Walst and drummer Neil Sanderson, Gontier decided to continue their musical careers under a new name - Three Days Grace. According to Gontier, the name represents the idea of having three days to change everything.
Three Days Grace
From 1997 to 2003, Gontier performed all the vocals and guitar parts for Three Days Grace. After the release of their self-titled debut album in 2003, solo guitarist Barry Stock joined the band to allow Gontier to focus more on vocals and rhythm parts. In 2006, the band released their second album, "One-X," which received critical acclaim and increased their popularity. Their third album, "Life Starts Now," was released in 2009 and further solidified the band's position in the alternative rock scene.
Departure from Three Days Grace and Solo Career
In 2012, just before their tour in support of their fourth album, "Transit of Venus," Gontier made the decision to leave Three Days Grace. Initially, he cited non-life-threatening health issues as the reason for his departure, but later revealed creative differences and dissatisfaction with the 2012 album as the main reasons. He was replaced as the lead vocalist by Matt Walst, Brad Walst's brother. After leaving the band, Gontier promised his fans that he would pursue a solo career.
Saint Asonia
After a hiatus, Gontier formed a new band called Saint Asonia in 2015. The band consisted of Gontier, Rich Beddoe from Finger Eleven, Corey Lowery from Eye Empire, and Mike Mushok from Staind. They released their debut single, "Better Place," and their self-titled album in the same year. The band gained attention and performed as a special guest at the Rock On The Range festival.
Personal Life
In May 2004, Gontier married his high school sweetheart Naomi Brewer. They recorded several songs together, including "Try to Catch Up With the World" and "Lost Your Shot." However, they divorced in 2013. In 2014, Gontier announced his engagement to Jeanie Marie and they got married in March 2015.
Solo Career
Gontier continued to perform as a solo artist, releasing several songs such as "It's All in Your Hands" and "Take Me With You." He also embarked on a solo tour with his childhood friends Tom Gardner on bass guitar, Rich Beddoe on drums and percussion, and his uncle Tom Duffy on solo guitar. Gontier expressed his intention to release a solo album in the near future.
Awards
Gontier has won two IMT pop awards and the Rock Single of the Year award. He received the "Big Time" award from Michael Bell at the Wire Awards in 2012, which was passed on to him by Canadian icon Ronnie Hawkins.
Personal Struggles
Gontier has struggled with addiction to oxycodone and hydrocodone. He underwent rehabilitation in 2005 and wrote many songs for Three Days Grace's album "One-X" during his time at the CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) in Toronto. He successfully overcame his addiction and a documentary film about his battle with drug addiction was released in 2007.
