Shakti Kapoor ‘begged’ wife Shivangi Kolhapure to give up a promising film career to marry him: ‘I apologised and said…’

Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure have been married for 43 years. In an earlier interaction, the Raja Babu actor opened up about how Shivangi left a promising acting and singing career to marry him, despite strong opposition from her family.

Speaking on the YouTube channel Timeout With Ankit, Shakti recalled first meeting Shivangi on the set of the film Kismet. He said, “I met her. She was a child artiste, and I was playing an older character in the film. She is 12 years younger than me. We met, fell in love, and I thought to myself, ‘Where will I find such a homely and beautiful girl?’ One day, I told her that my work was getting disturbed, and I needed to focus. She got very angry.”

Recounting how he eventually proposed to Shivangi, Shakti shared, “I went to her and begged her. I apologized and told her I wanted to marry her. I also said that I wanted her to be a housewife. We had a court marriage. After that, everyone accepted our union. She gave up her singing career and everything else for me. To this day, I fold my hands and thank her for that.”

Shivangi Kolhapure comes from a distinguished Marathi family. Her sister is the iconic actress Padmini Kolhapure, and her relatives include the late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Shakti, on the other hand, hails from a Punjabi family. Their differing cultural backgrounds became a point of contention, and their families strongly opposed their relationship.

However, the couple eloped and tied the knot in 1982. Their families reconciled with them after they welcomed their first child, Siddhant Kapoor. The couple later had a daughter, Shraddha Kapoor, in 1987, who has since become one of Bollywood’s leading actors.
