Biography of Isaias Afewerki

Isaias Afewerki was born on February 2, 1946, in Asmara, the capital and largest city of Eritrea. He began his political career in 1967 as a member of the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF). After four years of military training, he became the commander of the front.

Independence and Presidency

In the late 1980s, Eritrea faced turmoil and disorder as its people tried to take control of the state. In 1991, with the leadership of Isaias Afewerki and Meles Zenawi, the second President of Ethiopia, Eritrea achieved independence and was recognized as a sovereign state.

In 1993, Afewerki was elected as the President of Eritrea. He surrounded himself with trusted and reliable individuals who had fought alongside him during the struggle for independence. As a result, veterans of the war became the country's leaders.

Conflict and Criticism

In 1998, disagreements between Eritrea and Ethiopia led to a new conflict over border territories. The war resulted in the loss of many lives on both sides and led to economic deterioration in the country, as well as a decline in Afewerki's popularity.

In 2000, Eritrea officially acknowledged its defeat and peacekeeping forces were deployed to the country. Since then, no elections have been held in Eritrea. Afewerki and his government consistently reject the introduction of democracy, citing the country's fragile economic situation and the potential for further armed clashes and rebellions.

Authoritarian Rule

Afewerki has established strict regulations and limited freedom of speech and press in the country. More developed nations frequently criticize his despotic policies. One of Afewerki's priorities is maintaining a friendship with the Union of Islamic Courts, a Muslim rebel movement in Somalia. Eritrea grants political asylum to members of this movement and has sponsored them by providing weapons and financial support.

Despite the strict laws and rules, Isaias Afewerki officially remains a member of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice party. Presently, he attempts to cautiously and thoughtfully embrace democratic views, believing that there should be a single political pole in the country.
